Broken toys
My son left home for six months in September last year and I (finally!) found time to develop a hobby. Okay, I write this blog as a hobby, but I also started having weekly guitar lessons. I’ve been playing guitar since I was teenager and I’m mostly self taught, so it has been great to learn how to play properly.
I also did a creative writing course last year. And at the same time I went through (another) break-up and rediscovered Radiohead.
I wrote this song at the end of last year, inspired by broken love, Fake Plastic Trees, Tinder and stuff that went viral on the Internet. It’s the first song I’ve written since I was a teenager.
Broken Toys
She collects them in bulk online
Handsome men, best described
With the right words, perfect packaging
They take her to places she’s been
She falls in love with a picture
But they’re all broken inside, they’re all broken
The Snapchat girl knows what’s best
With her brightly-drawn boyfriend
She creates him with her own hand
He never disappoints her
She makes the world giddy
But she is still broken inside, she is broken
He dreams of his wedding day
But he know he’s dying this way
So he buys a Chinese doll
Takes a portrait for the world to know
He puts a diamond on her finger
But he is still broken inside, he is broken
She shares her music, her magic, her love
Her insides, her self, her soul
She makes mix tapes just for them
She shows every season within
She gives her heart to them, she gives her whole heart to him
Because she’s not broken inside, she is not broken
She alive, she’s real, she’s alive, she’s alive
